23. Definition
Jep took his seat once more, slamming his hands on the bar. “If just once along the way, any one of us simply decided to turn the other cheek, none of this would have ever happened. Why is it that if someone does something bad to someone, that evil has to be reciprocated? We live in a world full of terrible people doing terrible things to one another, and I don’t see any end to it. If we don’t start being good to each other now, right now, we’re all fucking doomed.”
22. And Then There Was One
Jep walked toward the couch and paused, hearing glass crunch beneath his boot. His anger had subsided to caution. Looking down he saw a broken wine glass. Turning his head, he saw another glass near Rhoya’s blue hand. Jep looked to the ground again and then back to Nave’s face, which wore a cold cobalt smile. He knew then that they were dead.
21. Amity
Jep was on his way to Karen’s home to end their relationship. It was the culmination of a year’s worth of planning, a year’s worth of faith in Nave’s word, which he now regretted – hated himself for.
20. Tonight It Is
How apropriate, thought Jep, standing beside Karen, the tears overcoming her eyes. She had tears for her friend Jules, but the tears were moreover for the way Jep had been treating her lately. Jep continued to be cold and distant toward her, which was causing her great sadness. What she failed to realize was that it brought Jep deep anguish as well. “Straighten up,” he said to her harshly. “You’re carrying on like a fool. It’s embarrassing.”
19. A Murder Suicide
Jep walked sluggishly over to Nave, seating himself beside him on the guardrail. Following Nave’s lead, he removed his sweat soaked shirt and flung in to the ground with a splash. His slender muscles shined as if flesh colored armor in the sun. He couldn’t have felt less like a gallant knight. “She won’t see it coming,” Jep exhaled. “Just gotta love the shit out of them, then blindside ‘em when they’re not looking.”
